April 5, 2007 - May 13, 2007
In order to showcase the continuing efforts of CAAM to document the African American contributions to the settlement of the West, the Museum presents Recent Acquisitions, 2007. This exhibition is a survey of the most relevant historical objects and artwork purchased by the curatorial team or donated to the museum since 2002.
The show includes, among others, African masks and artifacts, XIXth century stereographs depicting African Americans in cotton fields, historical artifacts such as a field cradle, and XIXth and XXth century photographs and dolls. The exhibition also displays contemporary prints, drawings and paintings by established artists Elizabeth Catlett, Charles White and John Riddle, as well as examples of work by younger practitioners, such as Frank James Williams, Marion Sampler and Milton Bowens.
