HARLEM OF THE WEST: Jazz, Bebop & Beatnik
   September 24, 2009 - May 2, 2010

Jazz, Bebop & Beatnik celebrates the San Francisco Fillmore District of the 1940's, 50's and early 60's where 19 mostly black owned and run jazz clubs existed in a 20 square block area. The top named jazz performers of that era frequented the Fillmore to perform and socialize. Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald and many others added their creative voice to a spirit that encouraged innovation and newness. The Bebop jazz in the Fillmore clubs was the epicenter of a creative movement that spread throughout San Francisco and inspired the Beat poets, visual artists, burlesque dancers, filmmakers and added spice and flavor to a predominantly African American community.
