PAST EXHIBITIONS

This exhibition presents selections from the California African American Museum’s Permanent Collection highlighting many pieces that have been protected in our vaults for over a decade, or that have been recently accessioned to the collection. The show displays a broad range of styles that depart from realistic representations, as well as a richness of materials and techniques that elicit wonder and invite visual exploration. While these artworks are filled with history and stories, we have grouped them according to formal qualities which affect their visual impact, such as movement, line, shape, color and texture. The show includes paintings, collages, prints, sculptures of mixed media/assemblages, furniture and textiles. Among the artists included are Benny Andrews, Phoebe Beasley, Frederick Brown, Edward Clark, Michael Cummings, Violet Fields, Dominique Moody, Joe Overstreet, Alma Thomas and Purvis Young. The exhibition even includes European abstract artists such as Vasarely, Miró and Picasso, whose works arrived to CAAM via the diverse collections of our African American donors.
