PRESENTATION AND LECTURE BY HARI JONES, CURATOR, AFRICAN AMERICAN
CIVIL WAR MEMORIAL, WASHINGTON, DC

Black History Month Tribute reception and lecture with Hari Jones, Curator - African American Civil War Memorial, Washington, DC.  Last year attendees enjoyed a riveting lecture by Mr. Jones, noted historian and adept storyteller, whose oration transfixed our audience.  This year, the focus is on the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the fight to pass the 13th Amendment to end slavery, and the critical role played by African Americans in the Civil War.  This event is free and the lecture is open to the public.  *The Reception is for members and specially-invited guests only.  RSVP required 213.744.7432.

Acclaimed actress Tina Lifford of the popular NBC series, "Parenthood", and author of the play The Circle will discuss her new book The Little Book of BIG LIES, and lead participants in an exercise designed to help us move past the 'Big Lies' that prevent us from living emotionally fulfilling and productive lives.  213.744.2024.

DAISY BATES, FIRST LADY OF LITTLE ROCK (78 Min, 2010)

Daisy Bates, who led the charge to desegregate the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, was a complex, unconventional, and largely forgotten heroine of the modern Civil Rights Movement.  With this documentary, Sharon La Cruise sets out to establish Ms. Bates' rightful place in history by showing the depth of her courage and commitment to social justice.  Q&A with a local community organizer follows.  RSVP preferred 213.744.2024.

WRITING DOWN THE BONES / AN ALCHEMY OF ARTS & LETTERS

Jack Grapes, a respected LA-based poet, writing instructor, and editor of ONTHEBUS, will lead an experimental writing workshop inspired by the art currently on view in CAAM's GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN exhibit.  All genres, ages and levels of experience are welcomed! SACRED PRAISE CHORALE

In conjunction with our exhibit, GO TELL IT  ON THE MOUNTAIN, Dr. Diane White-Clayton, who leads Faithful Central Bible Church's Sacred Praise Chorale and holds a Ph.D. in Musical Composition from UC Santa Barbara, will take us on a musical journey of African songs, spirituals, hymns and traditional gospel to illustrate the musical heritage of the African American church. Several of the artists featured in GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN will gather to discuss their work in the context of the exhibition.  The group will include Lynn Aldrich, Edgar Arceneaux, Todd Gray, and Nery Gabriel Lemus.  A closing reception to follow.  RSVP preferred 213.744.2024.
